Reese Witherspoon has selected Ashley Elston’s First Lie Wins as the January 2024 pick for Reese’s Book Club.

Elston’s novel, the YA author’s adult debut, was published Tuesday by Pamela Dorman/Viking. The book follows Evie Porter, a woman who appears to be living a perfect life, but, it turns out, does not really exist. A Kirkus reviewer described the book as “a genuine page-turner” about a “professional con woman [who] quickly realizes her latest job has become more personal and dangerous than planned.”

Witherspoon announced the selection—her popular book club’s 91st pick—this week in an Instagram post and video.

“This fast-paced read has everything you could want in a thriller: secret identities, a mysterious boss and a cat & mouse game that kept me guessing the whole way through. I did NOT expect that ending,” she wrote, adding in the video that the book is “such a fun read. There’s so many twists and turns, and I just couldn’t put it down.”

Elston reacted to the selection of her book on Instagram. “Y’all!! Reese picked my book!!” the author wrote. “I am overwhelmed and overjoyed and so very, very thankful for ALL of the amazing things that have come my way.”
